Aspiring writers will get the chance to meet and hear original work of the latest Good Thunder Reading Series guest writer on Thursday. Julianna Baggott, a prominent writer of poetry and children's and adult books, will meet with writers and lead a discussion on the craft of writing.
Writing children's books under the pen name N. E. Bode, and adult fiction under the second name Bridget Asher, Baggott's work includes 14 books published and forthcoming, three books of poetry and seven novels for young adults.
"[Baggott] fits the profile of a mid-career, established writer with a national reputation," said Richard Robbins, the director of creative writing and Good Thunder Reading Series at Minnesota State. "It's a bonus that she writes in three genres and can interest a broad variety of audience members."
Baggott will lead a discussion on the craft of writing at 3 p.m. in Ostrander Auditorium and will read some of her original work at 7:30 p.m. in Centennial Student Union 253. Her works include national bestsellers "Girl Talk" and "Which Brings Me to You."
"Visiting writers always offer their views about the writing process, the place of writers in our culture, and during their readings they present us with their published work," Robbins said. "I think students and other audience members should be able to broaden their understanding of some of these topics by listening to her speak."
In addition, 12 of Baggott's books have been published overseas and her work has appeared in dozens of publications, including Best American Poetry 2000, Virginia Quarterly Review and Glamour.
During her visit, Baggott will also be interviewed on KMSU-FM as part of the "Authors in Transit" series, which will air at 1 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. Friday.
Baggott lives in Florida with her husband, fellow writer G.W. Scott, and their four children. She also teaches as part of the creative writing program at Florida State University. Baggott and husband Scott are co-founders of the non-profit Kids in Need - Books in Deed organization, which provides books for children with incarcerated parents and children in foster care or shelters.
The Good Thunder Reading Series is funded by the MSU Department of English, the College of Arts & Humanities, the Office of Institutional Diversity and the Nadine B. Andreas Endowment, among others.
"The Good Thunder Series is one of the oldest literary presentation series in the state," Robbins said. "I encourage people who have never come to an event to try one and see why the series has endured for so long."
