About 100 students gathered in Ostrander Auditorium Monday night for the Urban Culture Club's 2nd Annual Open Mic Night and Talent Show. DJ Deuce spun turntables while about 15 Minnesota State students performed. The musical stylings of the event were mostly hip-hop, but there were also spoken word, hardcore and acoustic guitar performances.

"Punk Rock Tom" Hefferman, left, ethnic studies senior and co-host of KMSU show "World Beat," rocked out on guitar.

Maurice Pendleton, center, music industry sophomore, free-styled and sang a song he wrote, "Midwest Thang," an ode to Minnesota and a crowd favorite while DJ Deuce worked the turn tables.

Bianca Scott, right, business sophomore and emcee of the event, gave a spoken word rendition of Jill Scott's "Love Rain."

Other acts included non-traditional student Joe Petersen, a drug and alcohol studies senior who performed "Lynn's Song," a song he wrote dedicated to the memory of a friend he lost to a drug overdose.
