Democrats unite

April 6, 1967

Scott Dickman, a junior at Mankato State College in 1967, was elected state chairman of the Young DFL at the organizations annual convention.

About 400 YDFLers from all over Minnesota attended the convention, including 27 Blue Earth County delegates.

Bronson Lafollet, Wisconsin attorney general, spoke at the banquet and George Farr, DFL state chairman, gave the welcoming address. The second district - MSU YDFL and Blue Earth county YDFL - had the largest delegation and controlled at least 20 percent of the votes.

Dickman had the endorsement of the fourth district YDFL convention. He was the chief organizer and first president of the Blue Earth county YDFL club and had served as a liaison between the county and college clubs. As YDFL chairman, Dickman served as a member of the state DFL central and executive committees.

Mankato meat boycott ends

April 9, 1973

The nationwide meat boycott officially ended March 7, 1973. According to area food stores, Mankato residents did not feel the full effect of the national meat boycott, as those in the Mankato area were paying 20 cents per pound less than the national average.

Nationally, food stores in many parts of the U.S. reported sales drops between 20 and 40 percent and in some cases as high as 60 percent.

The price of packaged food and produce climbed 2.2 percent in March, 1973 - the sharpest climb in 22 years according to a government report at the time. The surge in prices was led by a 4.6 percent jump in wholesale costs of farm products and processed foods.

Interesting debate

April 6, 2000

In what the Reporter called "a relatively uneventful" Minnesota State Student Association presidential debate, today would seem anything but.

Presidential candidate Bob Pavlenko accused competitor Chris Boyce of "Stacking the deck against the students," by serving briefly on the Elections Committee.

MSSA President Sylvia Oelberg corrected this statement, saying that Boyce was indeed appointed but immediately resigned.

Pavlenko pointed out his four years of MSSA experience and also referred to himself as "that red-haired freak."

Candidate Clink Pulk referred to himself as "the average guy" and proposed parties and rock concerts along with his plans to reach out to students.

"We're going to rock this place," Pulk said.

Boyce said that he was against a parental notification policy for alcohol offenses and possible legislation, which would offer censure as a punishment for any MSU-funded event at which recognized student organization members consumed alcohol or drugs.

Chris Boyce was elected, and running-mate Timothy Huebsch was elected vice president, although only 838 students voted in the election.

Republicans rewarded

April 10, 2007

The MSU chapter of College Republicans was awarded the Tim Pawlenty Chapter of the Year Award March 23 at the Minnesota State College Republicans convention.

MSU's chapter was chosen out of 41 state chapters to be honored with the award. The award was determined by what each chapter in the state had accomplished during the past year, according to MSU College Republicans President James Dye.
